Help oppose HB116

The "grocery tax bill" is likely to go to the House floor for a vote Thursday, February 26!
We need to fight this. While it will remove the sales tax from food, this would remove the "federal income tax exemption" from the State income tax; and become a net tax INCREASE for any family making over $40,000/year. Encourage your Senator and Representative to introduce a bill to remove the sales tax without shifting the tax burden, but instead REDUCES SPENDING.

There are four easy things you can do to help:
• First, please make sure to contact your representative.

• Consider e-mailing Gov. Bob Riley

• Also consider calling the House switchboard at (334) 242-7600 and leave a message asking your representative to vote NO on HB 116.

• Encourage your friends and family to do the same by sharing this information.

Please immediately urge your representative to vote NO on HB 116!

On Saturday January 24, 2009, Jesse Adkinson, spoke to the Alabama Libertarian Party.

From the Independent Political Report "Jesse explained that the current bill in the legislature is less than ideal from the group’s perspective, since it offsets cuts in grocery taxes by making federal taxes non-deductible on state income tax forms. The bill has support from the legislature’s Black Caucus. We discussed the possibility of friendly amendments, as well as ideas about working on repealing grocery taxes at the county and city levels, including an effort already being organized in Birmingham. Additionally, we floated the idea of also working to repeal sales taxes on medicine, although no concrete action on that has yet taken place."
